State-Level AI Task Forces
Across the United States, state governments are establishing AI task forces to address the rapidly evolving landscape of artificial intelligence (AI). These state-level AI task forces aim to harness the benefits of AI, ensuring ethical and responsible use, while mitigating its risks and challenges. These task forces bring together industry leaders and academic partners to develop guidelines and policies for the responsible use of AI – shaping the future of AI governance at the state level.
Aligning Objectives Across State AI Task Forces
Scope
State AI task forces have established clear objectives and success metrics, focusing on economic growth, job creation, and ethical AI use across the public sector, private sector, workforce, and policy domains.
Commitments
State AI task forces are committed to responsible AI use through policy development, conducting research to support AI advancement, and ensuring transparency and accountability through public reporting. Additionally, they prioritize strong governance by fostering diverse membership, laying the groundwork for ethical and effective AI deployment.
Continued Involvement
These AI task forces initially assess AI’s impact on their states, then transition to expanding AI access, promoting adoption, and applying AI across multiple industries.
Rhode Island and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts AI Task Forces
Rhode Island and Massachusetts are among the states that have established AI task forces to guide AI adoption and regulation. These efforts are critical in addressing the challenges and opportunities presented by AI, ensuring that its development and use align with ethical standards and public interests.
Massachusetts AI Government Task Force
In early 2024, Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey signed an Executive Order establishing an AI Strategic Task Force to study AI and Generative Artificial Intelligence technology and its impact on the state, private businesses, higher education institutions, and constituents. The primary goal of the task force is to conduct outreach and collect input from stakeholders and experts, advise the governor and executive branch of the state’s role in AI implementation, and find ways to encourage leading industries to adopt the technology. Additionally, it will provide recommendations for how the state can support Massachusetts businesses and startups in adopting and scaling AI.
“Massachusetts has the opportunity to be a global leader in Applied AI, but it’s going to take us bringing together the brightest minds in tech, business, education, health care and government”
Maura Healey
Massachusetts Governor
NeuroSoph’s Role in the Massachusetts AI Government Task Force
NeuroSoph Inc., with its deep expertise and experience in the public sector, played a pivotal role in the Massachusetts AI Task Force group. This collaborative effort served as a dynamic forum for exploring innovative applications of AI that enhance government operations and improve services for Massachusetts residents. Our contributions focused on leveraging our expertise in AI-driven chatbots, document processing, and assisted intake solutions to identify practical use cases that address key challenges in state operations.
We played a key role in educating the task force on the distinctions between traditional AI and generative AI. Traditional AI focuses on analyzing historical data and making predictions based on predefined rules and algorithms, excelling in tasks with well-defined rules and structured data. In contrast, generative AI, powered by advanced algorithms and large datasets, creates new content by learning patterns from data and generating new instances that mimic the training data. We provided detailed insights into how these different types of AI can be used to streamline workflows, reduce case processing times, and provide equitable access to government resources.
"At NeuroSoph, we are proud to have played a pivotal role in the Massachusetts AI Government Task Force Group, collaborating with state leaders, policymakers, and industry experts to drive meaningful advancements in the adoption of AI technologies for the public sector."

Helping to Guide Responsible AI Use in Government
Our team worked closely with members of the AI task force to develop strategies for the ethical and responsible use of AI in government settings. We provided input to help establish guidelines that emphasize transparency and trust, focusing on key principles such as human oversight, ensuring humans remain integral to AI decision-making, explainability and accountability of AI systems, and public engagement through participation and feedback.
This initiative resulted in a comprehensive report to state leadership, providing a roadmap for responsibly integrating AI into government services. This report not only underscored the potential benefits of AI but also addressed the ethical considerations and regulatory frameworks necessary for its successful implementation.
Rhode Island AI Government Task Force
In a significant step towards embracing the transformative potential of AI, Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee established the Rhode Island Artificial Intelligence Task Force through an executive order in early 2024. Chaired by former Congressman Jim Langevin, the Rhode Island AI Task Force brings together members from diverse sectors such as manufacturing, finance, healthcare, small business, education, and government. Its goal is to develop a comprehensive roadmap for AI implementation in Rhode Island, aimed at enhancing public services, improving operational efficiency, and establishing ethical guardrails to maximize AI benefits while minimizing its risks.
"Embracing AI and finding safe methods and practices for it in our government and economy is crucial for our state’s future. With this task force and other efforts underway, Rhode Island is poised to better the lives of Rhode Islanders and help chart a new course for the innovation technology landscape.”
Dan McKee
Rhode Island Governor
